French Bulldogs Bred for More Than Colour
At Le Epitome Kennels, we specialise in coloured French Bulldogs bred at our family home in Waikato, serving Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga and homes throughout New Zealand. Our French Bulldog programme includes selected blue, lilac, Isabella, rojo, Isabella rojo, new shade, tan point, fawn, red fawn, trindle. While French Bulldogs are traditionally a short-coated breed, we have also imported selected “fluffy” coat lines into our programme.
Our French Bulldog puppy programme focuses on health, temperament, confidence, sound structure and standout character. Colour is part of our programme, but it is never the whole programme. Colours and coat types vary depending on the breeding pair and litter, but our focus remains on producing well-rounded French Bulldogs without compromising on care, quality or wellbeing.
Health testing and breeding selection matter as much as colour. Our French Bulldog programme considers DNA results, genetic diversity, breathing, structure, movement, patellas, temperament, family history and veterinary feedback before a dog remains in our breeding programme. We are progressively incorporating recognised brachycephalic respiratory assessment principles, including the Cambridge / Royal Kennel Club Respiratory Function Grading framework, and we work with experienced brachycephalic veterinary practitioners when assessing breeding suitability.
Before dogs are brought into our breeding programme, we obtain a full DNA profile and review their results carefully. This gives us more than a simple pass-or-fail disease screen. It helps us identify known inherited disease risks, understand colour and coat traits, assess genetic diversity, and make more informed decisions about future pairings. In pedigree breeds such as French Bulldogs, maintaining genetic diversity matters because closed gene pools can allow undesirable traits and inherited risks to become more concentrated over time. We consider this carefully when introducing selected new bloodlines from New Zealand and overseas.
As a long-established kennel, we have had the opportunity to understand our lines over multiple generations. That matters. Our breeding decisions combine DNA results, genetic diversity scores, long-term knowledge of our own bloodlines, family history, structure, temperament and real-world observed health. This allows us to continue developing coloured French Bulldogs with the distinctive Le Epitome look and temperament we are known for, while still working carefully to protect and improve the lines behind them.
Except where we have introduced selected new dogs to improve genetic diversity, our breeding dogs are direct descendants of the original lines we established. This is especially important in our French Bulldog programme, where long-term knowledge of our own bloodlines gives us a clearer understanding of what our dogs produce over time in temperament, structure, type, health and character.
Our puppies are well started with toilet training before they leave us. They are raised with consistent toileting routines from the start, giving new owners a strong foundation to continue from at home. Like all young puppies, they may still have occasional accidents while adjusting to a new environment — because let’s face it, as cute as they are, French Bulldogs are not perfect little unicorns with bat ears. We provide clear guidance and ongoing support to help owners complete the training process with confidence.
French Bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed, so informed ownership matters. We encourage sensible exercise, heat awareness, appropriate weight management and ongoing veterinary care. Our puppy buyers receive guidance before and after collection to help give their puppy the best possible start.

French Bulldog Puppy Transport
If you are not based in Waikato, you may still be able to welcome one of our French Bulldog puppies. We regularly work with suitable homes across New Zealand, including Northland, Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Queenstown, Timaru, and other South Island locations. We have also placed puppies with selected overseas homes, including Australia, Singapore, and Tahiti. Where in-person collection is not practical, we can discuss trusted third-party pet transport options and help coordinate handover with your chosen transport provider.
French Bulldogs Raised with Care in Waikato, NZ
At Le Epitome Kennels, we breed French Bulldogs from our family home in Waikato, serving Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga and families throughout New Zealand. Our puppies are raw-fed, well handled, and raised with a focus on temperament, confidence, structure, health and character — with colour as part of a carefully selected breeding programme, not the only reason for it.
French Bulldogs trace their origins back to the English Toy Bulldog. When English lacemakers moved to France, they took their small bulldogs with them. Over time, these dogs were crossed with local ratter-type dogs, eventually developing into the French Bulldog we know today.
French Bulldogs are short, muscular companion dogs with distinctive upright ears, expressive faces, and big personalities. They are affectionate, playful, enthusiastic, and a little cheeky. They love being close to their people and are happiest when included in everyday life.
They generally require only moderate exercise, making them well suited to modern living. A daily walk, playtime, and plenty of human interaction are usually more important to them than long-distance activity.

French Bulldogs and Water
French Bulldogs are often described as dogs that cannot swim. In reality, it depends on the individual dog. Because of their compact, muscular build, short muzzle, and heavy front end, many French Bulldogs are not naturally strong swimmers and should always be supervised around water.
That said, some French Bulldogs are confident and capable in water when raised with sensible exposure and good physical condition. At Le Epitome Kennels, our dogs are raised around real outdoor environments, including water, under supervision. We believe confidence, curiosity, and safe exposure all play a role in developing well-rounded dogs.
Water safety still matters. French Bulldogs should never be left unsupervised around pools, ponds, rivers, or beaches, and owners should use caution around water.
For the right homes, a well-raised French Bulldog is a loyal, entertaining, deeply affectionate companion — full of character, confidence, and just enough cheek to keep life interesting.
