Coloured French Bulldogs
Bred for Health, Temperament and Type
French Bulldogs come in a wide range of colours and coat types, but colour should never be the only reason to choose a puppy. At Le Epitome Kennels in Waikato, New Zealand, our French Bulldog programme includes selected blue, chocolate, lilac, Isabella, rojo, tan point, fawn, trindle and fluffy lines, while keeping our main focus on health, breathing, structure, temperament, confidence and family suitability.
French Bulldog Colours in Our Breeding Programme
At Le Epitome Kennels, colour is part of a wider breeding programme rather than a standalone goal. We work with selected French Bulldog colour and coat lines, including blue, chocolate, lilac, Isabella, rojo, tan point, fawn, red fawn, trindle and fluffy lines. Each breeding decision considers the whole dog: DNA results, genetic diversity, breathing, structure, movement, temperament, family history and suitability for life as a companion.
Not every colour is available in every litter. French Bulldog colours depend on the genetics of the breeding pair, and some combinations are naturally less common than others. Our focus is on matching the right puppy to the right home, while continuing to develop healthy, confident and well-rounded French Bulldogs with the distinctive Le Epitome look and temperament.
How French Bulldog Colours Are Inherited
French Bulldog colours are influenced by inherited genes passed down from each parent. Some colours and patterns are visible, while others may be carried without showing in the dog’s coat. This is why DNA testing is important in a serious breeding programme. It helps us understand not only what colour a dog is, but what colour and coat traits they may carry and pass on to future puppies.
At Le Epitome Kennels, we use DNA results alongside our long-term knowledge of each bloodline. This helps us plan pairings more carefully, avoid unnecessary risk, maintain genetic diversity, and better understand the colour possibilities within each litter.
Health Comes Before Colour
Colour can be exciting, but it should never be the main measure of a French Bulldog. A well-bred French Bulldog should be selected for breathing, temperament, structure, movement, confidence, family suitability and long-term wellbeing, not coat colour alone.
At Le Epitome Kennels, colour is considered within a wider breeding decision. Before a dog remains in our programme, we consider DNA results, genetic diversity, breathing, structure, movement, patellas, temperament, family history and veterinary feedback. We are also progressively incorporating recognised brachycephalic respiratory assessment principles, including the Cambridge / Royal Kennel Club Respiratory Function Grading framework, and we work with experienced brachycephalic veterinary practitioners when assessing breeding suitability.
This approach helps us continue developing coloured French Bulldogs while keeping welfare, comfort and soundness at the centre of the programme.
Do Coloured French Bulldogs Have More Health Problems?
A colour label by itself does not tell you whether a French Bulldog is healthy or unhealthy. Some colour genetics can carry specific considerations, and different lines can vary significantly in health, structure and robustness. The bigger question is how the dog has been bred, tested, assessed and selected.
Poor breeding decisions, narrow genetic selection, weak structure, poor breathing, unsuitable pairings, lack of DNA testing and breeding for colour above everything else can all create problems. This is why colour should be considered as one part of the whole dog, not as the main reason to breed or choose a puppy.
At Le Epitome Kennels, we do not treat colour as a shortcut. Our coloured French Bulldog programme considers DNA results, genetic diversity, breathing, movement, structure, temperament, patellas, family history and veterinary feedback. We also consider what each dog has produced over time, because long-term knowledge of a bloodline is often just as important as a single test result.
A coloured French Bulldog should still be a sound, confident, well-rounded companion. The colour may make the puppy stand out, but health, comfort, temperament and suitability for family life are what matter most.
Choosing the Right French Bulldog Colour for Your Home
It is natural to have a favourite colour, but the best French Bulldog for your home is not always the rarest or most striking puppy in the litter. Temperament, confidence, energy level, structure, breathing and overall fit matter more than colour alone.
Some homes are best suited to a calm, settled puppy. Others may suit a more outgoing, playful character. Families with young children, existing dogs, busy households or first-time owners may all need slightly different traits. This is why we look carefully at each puppy as an individual rather than placing puppies by colour preference alone.
At Le Epitome Kennels, we want each puppy to go to the right home. Colour can be part of your preference, but our goal is to help you choose a French Bulldog who fits your lifestyle, your household and your long-term expectations.
French Bulldog Colour Availability
French Bulldog colours vary from litter to litter. Not every colour is available at all times, and some colours or coat types may only appear occasionally depending on the breeding pair. Blue, chocolate, lilac, Isabella, rojo, tan point, fawn, trindle and fluffy lines are all part of our wider programme, but each litter is planned around the whole dog rather than colour alone.
Because our puppies are placed carefully, availability is not simply a matter of choosing a colour from a list. We consider puppy temperament, household suitability, buyer readiness, timing, health, structure and overall fit before confirming a placement.
If you are interested in a particular French Bulldog colour, the best step is to contact us or join our waiting list. You are welcome to tell us your colour preferences, but we recommend staying open to the right puppy rather than focusing only on one specific colour.

French Bulldog Colour FAQ
What French Bulldog colours does Le Epitome Kennels breed?
We work with selected French Bulldog colour and coat lines, including blue, chocolate, lilac, Isabella, rojo, tan point, fawn, red fawn, trindle and fluffy lines. Availability depends on the breeding pair and the individual litter.
Are coloured French Bulldogs less healthy?
Colour alone does not determine health. The more important question is how the dog has been bred. A coloured French Bulldog should still be selected for breathing, structure, movement, temperament, genetic diversity and overall wellbeing.
Can I choose a puppy by colour?
You are welcome to tell us your colour preferences, but we do not place puppies by colour alone. We also consider temperament, household suitability, health, structure, timing and overall fit.
Do fluffy French Bulldogs have long coats?
Fluffy French Bulldogs carry a longer coat type compared with the traditional short-coated French Bulldog. While fluffy coat lines are part of our wider programme, availability is limited and depends on the genetics of each breeding pair.
How do I join the waiting list for a coloured French Bulldog?
You can contact Le Epitome Kennels or join our waiting list and tell us your preferred colour, sex and timing. We will consider your preferences while prioritising the right puppy for the right home.
