Our Chocolate Pug Breeding Programme

Our chocolate Pug programme has been developed through several related but distinct family lines. This gives us more options when planning future matings and avoids relying too heavily on a single dog, pairing or narrow line of ancestry.

The programme includes Fudge and Coco, our chocolate females; Cinnamon, our chocolate cream merle female; Tim Tam, our chocolate and tan male; Toffee Pop, our chocolate and tan female; Nutmeg, our chocolate fawn sable female; Lucky, our chocolate fawn fluffy male; Cookie, our chocolate and tan merle fluffy female; and Lucy, our chocolate and tan fluffy female.

Together, these dogs allow us to work with chocolate across smooth, fluffy, tan point, fawn, cream, sable and merle lines. Each proposed mating is assessed individually according to pedigree, genetic compatibility, family history and the strengths and weaknesses of both parents.

Maintaining several dogs within the programme also helps us understand how breathing, physical health, temperament, structure, movement, colour and coat develop across multiple generations. This long-term knowledge guides our decisions about which dogs to retain and how each family line should develop.

Chocolate is an important part of our programme, but colour alone never determines a breeding decision. Our aim is to produce healthy, confident and affectionate Pugs while continuing to strengthen and diversify the chocolate lines we have established.

Chocolate Pug Colours, Patterns and Coat Types

Chocolate Pugs can have a wider range of appearances than many people expect. Within our programme, chocolate may appear as solid chocolate, chocolate and tan, chocolate fawn, chocolate sable or alongside merle patterning. Chocolate can also occur with the recessive long-haired coat responsible for fluffy Pugs.

Colour, pattern and coat type are inherited separately, which means a chocolate Pug may also carry tan points, show a fawn or sable appearance, have a merle pattern or have a fluffy coat. Some chocolate lines may also contribute to the development of lilac Pugs when combined with the appropriate inherited colour traits.

This page provides a practical introduction for families interested in chocolate Pugs. A more detailed explanation of how colour, pattern and coat inheritance work can be found in our dog colour and coat genetics guide . You can also explore our merle Pug lines and fluffy Pug lines.

Available and Upcoming Chocolate Pug Puppies

Chocolate Pug puppies are not available from every Le Epitome Kennels litter. Their availability depends on our planned pairings, the puppies born, their individual development and whether they are suitable for companion homes. We do not allocate puppies by colour alone. Each puppy is assessed for health, breathing, movement, temperament and overall suitability before being matched with a family.

Our current and planned litters can be viewed on our upcoming and available French Bulldog and Pug puppies page . This page is updated as puppies become available and as planned litters are confirmed.

Families specifically interested in a chocolate Pug can also apply to join the Le Epitome Kennels puppy waiting list . Our waiting list is based on suitability and thoughtful puppy matching, rather than operating strictly on a first-come, first-served basis.

We place puppies with approved homes throughout New Zealand. Families living outside Waikato can read more about collection and independent pet-transport arrangements on our puppy transport information page.
