Fluffy Pugs have the familiar expression, compact build and affectionate personality of a Pug, combined with a naturally longer and softer coat. The extra coat is often most noticeable around the ears, neck, chest, tail and back of the legs, giving each fluffy Pug a distinctive appearance.
At Le Epitome Kennels, our fluffy Pug programme is centred around Lucy and Cookie, our two fluffy-coated females. Both were produced using imported semen from Teddy Bear, a fluffy Pug sire from the United Kingdom, introducing an important long-coat bloodline into our established New Zealand Pug programme.
Lucy is a chocolate and tan fluffy Pug, while Cookie combines chocolate and tan, merle and the fluffy coat. Alongside these females, we retain selected smooth-coated Pugs carrying the long-coat gene, giving us additional options for developing future fluffy Pugs across compatible chocolate, tan point, fawn, blue and merle colour lines.
The fluffy coat is inherited recessively. A short-coated Pug can carry the long-coat gene without showing it, while a fluffy puppy must inherit a compatible long-coat variant from both parents. DNA testing helps us identify carriers, confirm coat genetics and plan future pairings more accurately.
Coat type and colour are only part of every breeding decision. We also consider breathing, physical health, temperament, structure, movement, reproductive suitability, relatedness, genetic diversity and the long-term history of each family line.

What Is a Fluffy Pug?
A fluffy Pug, sometimes called a long-haired Pug, is a Pug that has inherited the genetic variants responsible for a longer coat from both parents. It is not a separate breed. Beneath the additional coat, a fluffy Pug should still retain the recognisable character, proportions and temperament of a well-bred Pug.
The amount and texture of coat can vary between individual dogs. Some fluffy Pugs develop a noticeably longer coat across most of the body, while others show the greatest length around the ears, neck, chest, tail and back of the legs. Puppy coats also continue to develop as the dog matures, so the eventual adult coat cannot always be judged from a very young puppy.
A smooth-coated Pug may carry the fluffy coat gene without looking any different from another short-coated Pug. When two genetically compatible dogs are paired, they may produce fluffy puppies, even when one or both parents have smooth coats. DNA testing allows us to confirm which dogs carry the relevant coat variants rather than relying on appearance or family history alone.
Fluffy Pugs generally require more coat care than smooth-coated Pugs. Regular brushing helps remove loose hair, prevent tangles and keep the longer areas of coat clean. Their facial folds, ears, nails, skin and general body condition require the same routine attention as those of any other Pug.
Coat length does not determine health, temperament or breeding quality. Our Fluffy Pug Lines
Our fluffy Pug programme is built around Lucy and Cookie, our two fluffy-coated dams. Both are daughters of Teddy Bear, a fluffy Pug sire from the United Kingdom whose semen was imported to New Zealand for our breeding programme.
Lucy
Lucy is a chocolate and tan fluffy Pug and one of the foundation dams of our long-coat lines. As a daughter of Teddy Bear, she carries the imported UK lineage at the centre of our developing fluffy Pug programme.
Cookie
Cookie is a chocolate and tan merle fluffy Pug and another daughter of Teddy Bear. She brings together our fluffy, chocolate, tan point and merle lines. Any future mating involving Cookie will use a DNA-confirmed non-merle male.
Fluffy-Coat Carriers in Our Programme
Our wider Pug programme also includes smooth-coated dogs that carry the fluffy coat gene. These dogs allow us to preserve and combine selected family traits while continuing to develop our long-coat lines.
Cinnamon, our chocolate cream merle female, carries the fluffy coat gene. Her father, Chino, was our former chocolate fawn sire and was also a fluffy-coat carrier, allowing that part of his lineage to continue through Cinnamon.
Tim Tam also carries the fluffy coat gene and provides another family line that may contribute to future fluffy Pug litters.
Lucy, Cookie and our selected carrier dogs give us several possible routes for developing future fluffy Pugs without relying on a single dog or one narrow family line.
Future Fluffy Pug Puppies
Our fluffy Pug programme is still developing, with future breeding plans centred around Lucy and Cookie and supported by carefully selected fluffy-coat carriers within our wider Pug lines.
Depending on the parents selected, future litters may include fluffy puppies in chocolate, tan point, fawn, blue, merle and other compatible colour combinations. However, coat type, colour, sex and markings can never be guaranteed before a litter is born.
Every mating is planned around the compatibility of the individual dogs rather than demand for a particular appearance. Our priorities remain breathing, physical health, temperament, structure, movement, genetic diversity and the long-term quality of each family line.
Fluffy Pug puppies are expected to be limited, and availability will depend on successful matings, litter outcomes and which puppies are retained for the future of our programme.
